Are Certain BAND-AID Brands Killing Us? Report Warns That They Could Contain Cancer-Causing forever Chemicals That Enter Into The Bloodstream Through Open Wounds

Updated: Apr 5

A recent report from Mamavation revealed that out of 40 bandages tested, 26 showed detectable levels of organic fluorine, indicating the presence of PFAS chemicals. The levels ranged from 11 to 328 parts per million, with 10 out of 16 bandages for black and brown skin tones showing signs of PFAS.

Reported on the Daily Mail UK, a recent investigation conducted by a prominent watchdog has revealed the presence of fluorine in more than twenty-five various types of bandages commonly stocked in countless medicine cabinets nationwide. These PFAS chemicals, occasionally utilized in adhesive production, are suspected to be byproducts of the standard manufacturing procedure. While fluorine is also employed in the creation of rocket fuel, its exposure can result in skin burns and eye harm. However, the greatest risk lies in inhalation.

According to Dr. Linda Birnbaum, an expert toxicologist and former leader of the National Toxicology Program, the discovery that hazardous chemicals can directly come into contact with open wounds is truly concerning. These chemicals, known as PFAS, have the ability to enter the bloodstream when consumed through contaminated water or food. Once inside the body, they can embed themselves in healthy tissues, causing harm to vital organs such as the immune system, liver, kidneys, and more. This highlights the urgent need for further research and regulation to protect public health.

"Because bandages are placed upon open wounds, it's troubling to learn that they may be also exposing children and adults to PFAS,” Linda S. Birnbaum, scientist emeritus and former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program and scholar at residence at Duke University, told Mamavation of the new findings.

“It's obvious from the data that PFAS are not needed for wound care, so it's important that the industry remove their presence to protect the public from PFAS and opt instead for PFAS-free materials," she added.

Disclosure written on Mamavation blog says, This consumer study is released in partnership with Environmental Health News. Scientific reviews were performed by (1) Terrence Collins, Teresa Heinz Professor of Green Chemistry & Director of the Institute for Green Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, & (2) Linda S. Organic fluorine is a key indicator of PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," which have been associated with various health issues. These include reduced immune system function, developmental problems in children, certain cancers, and more.

The EHN and Mamavation report expands on their extensive collection of consumer products tested for PFAS contamination. From contact lenses to pasta and tomato sauces, sports bras to tampons, dental floss to electrolytes, butter wrappers to fast food packaging, diapers to condoms, and deodorants, their research reveals the presence of PFAS in various everyday items.

While most people are aware of PFAS pollution in water, Mamavation's testing shows that we are also exposed to these harmful chemicals through the products we wear, consume, and apply on our bodies. To gain a deeper understanding of how and why PFAS ends up in these products, take a look at our investigative report, "PFAS on our shelves and in our bodies."

Now, you might wonder why PFAS are even found in bandages. The exact reason is not entirely clear. However, according to the Green Science Policy Institute, PFAS chemicals are sometimes used in adhesives. In fact, 3M, the company behind Sticky Notes and other products that utilize weak adhesives, has committed to discontinuing the use of all PFAS by the end of 2025.

Mamavation says they have evidence of PFAS in well-known bandage brands like Band-Aid, Equate, and CVS Health. However, there is a silver lining. Some bandages, such as those from 3M and Tru Colour, have been found to be completely free of organic fluorine and other harmful compounds. This means that you can still find safe and reliable options for your wound care needs.
