Common Stereotype That People Talking Fast Is Indicative Of Higher Intelligence, Experts Weigh In

Why some people talk fast & others take their time−despite cliché, has nothing to with intelligence. Linguists have discovered that human speech rates vary within sentences across all languages. Most people, for example, slow down their speech before saying nouns. Researchers discovered that different languages have different speech rates when spoken aloud. The average speech rate in French, Spanish, and Japanese was found to be close to eight syllables per second. German, Vietnamese, and Mandarin had slower rates--around five syllables per second. English was in the middle, with an average syllable rate of 6.19 per second.
